SUMMARY:Emoce a národ. Pospolitost\, společenství a národ v narativních pramenech Brabantska a českých zemí středověku (1300–1400)
DESCRIPTION:Na počátku 14. století v Čechách i v Brabantsku lze zachytit projevy národního uvědomění\, které se však odlišovalo jak intenzitou\, tak hodnotami\, jež vycházely z rozdílných společensko-politických podmínek. V obou zemích došlo v důsledku nástupnických krizí k oslabení autority panovníka (vymření přemyslovské dynastie v roce 1306 v Čechách\, mládí Jana III. Brabantského po smrti Jana II. v roce 1312). V důsledku těchto změn lze v obou zemích pozorovat dominanci – v podobě politických ambicí – určitých společenských skupin. V českých zemích se jednalo o českou šlechtu\, v Brabantsku o brabantské měšťanstvo. Oběma skupinám se podařilo na několik desetiletí výrazně ovlivňovat politické dění v zemi. Za projevy zmíněných ambicí považujeme vernakulární literaturu\, respektive literaturu ve staré češtině a nizozemštině\, které přispěly k představě o národní identitě skupin\, jež se prezentovaly jako klíčoví (jediní) ochránci země. Přednáška se zaměří na fenomén národa jako proces\, který vzniká v nerovnováze emocí a reálných možností. Vzhledem k tomu\, že národ je podle Éloïse Adde fenomén jak kolektivní\, tak individuální\, bude hlavním cílem této přednášky právě zkoumání tohoto emocionálního rozměru a přechodu mezi aspiracemi jednotlivců a strategiemi\, které vyvíjeli ti\, jež vládli. V širším měřítku se na konkrétních příkladech Brabantu a Čech pokusí vysvětlit\, kde se vlastně idea národa objevila\, a proč se na konci středověku stala úspěšným „politickým faktorem“. \nPro odkaz na Zoom link kontaktujte: sekretariat@hiu.cas.cz

SUMMARY:The Middle Ages as a Digital Experience
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of last year’s Medievalisms on the Screen conference (recordings here)\, organized by PhD students from the Department of Medieval Studies\, the call for proposals is open now for The Middle Ages as a Digital Experience conference\, which will be held online on April 21–23\, 2022. \nDeadline: February 15\, 2022. Paper proposals\, no longer than 250 words in length for a 20-minute paper\, should be sent to the organizing team at medievalisms@ceu.edu. \nDigital media has become a key player in shaping our understanding of historical events. Videogames\, series\, films\, among others\, offer an ever-increasing repertoire of experiences of the Middle Ages. Part of the popularity of these productions relies on the fact that they offer a unique sensory experience to the spectator. They stun us through awe-inspiring visuals\, immerse us with the reconstruction of daily-life sound\, and engage us with compelling stories of people we can relate to. Digital productions invite us to be witnesses and protagonists in increasingly complex reconstructions of a long-lost medieval past. The pedagogical potential of these productions is difficult to deny. They can be used to re-contextualize everyday objects\, reconstruct and explore places lost to time\, revitalize the popular interest in heritage sites\, and engage a large and diverse audience with historiographical debates both about the Middle Ages themselves\, and the way we perceive them today. \nHowever\, the use of digital media also faces drawbacks and challenges. Although these productions may allow us to explore the streets of a medieval city\, it is hardly the same as what a person of the past lived. The mind frame and social conventions that led people to experience it in a particular way have changed\, and no technological advancement can bridge this temporal abyss. The experience offered by digital media should be best understood as a model of the Middle Ages that we superimpose on the past. As Benedetto Croce points out:\n“All history is contemporary history.” However\, the sensorial appeal behind films\, series\, and videogames engages the spectator to such a level\, that the distinction between the reconstruction and the historical past can be easily blurred. \nThe purpose of our second Medievalisms on the Screen conference is to discuss the productions\, potentials\, drawbacks and challenges of inclusive and immersive experiences of the Middle Ages that digital media may entwine. SUMMARY:XXVIII. setkání doktorandů a mladých badatelů
DESCRIPTION:Setkání si tradičně klade za cíl poskytnout prostor pro navázání kontaktů mezi doktorandy a možnost seznámit se s prací kolegů z jiných pracovišť i z jiných oborů medievistického studia. Připomínáme\, že asi patnáctiminutové referáty mohou vycházet z diplomových prací nebo seznamovat s dílčími výsledky prací doktorských. Uvítáme příspěvky nových doktorandů i těch\, kteří již vystoupili na některém z minulých setkání. Vzhledem k mezioborové povaze setkání by referáty měly mít formu přístupnou nejen úzce specializovanému auditoriu. \nProsíme Vás\, abyste svou účast potvrdili a své příspěvky přihlásili v tomto formuláři. \nZároveň prosíme školitele o přeposlání této informace svým doktorandům\, neboť ne na všechny máme kontakty!

SUMMARY:CfA: September Summer School in Medieval Studies
DESCRIPTION:Crisis & Transition in Late Medieval Central Europe: Politics – Religion – Environment\nThe organizers invite Ph.D. students to apply for a five-day September School in Medieval Studies that will explore the phenomenon of the so-called „Crisis of the Late Middle Ages“ in a Central European context from the perspective of political\, environmental\, and religious history. \nSociety tends to be sensitive to indications of crisis at a time when the political situation is shaken and a general sense of insecurity spreads. This is also true for the so-called crisis of the Late Middle Ages. The September School on „Crisis & Transition in Late Medieval Central Europe“ suggests analysing the correlation between the perception of crisis by individuals and social groups\, objective economic (crop failures\, dearth\, famine)\, biological (epidemics)\, and environmental indicators (extreme weather events\, climatic change)\, and the ‚public‘ discourse in which the situation is reflected. In this way\, the Summer School attempts to replace a separate consideration of these aspects\, which has long characterized Central European research on the crisis of the late Middle Ages\, with an integrative approach that assumes an interlocking of political\, religious\, and economic spheres and their interaction with natural conditions. \nThis intensive five-day course for Ph.D. students in medieval studies will introduce the participants to the topic through working with sources and discussing the relevant historiography from all three mentioned fields of research on politics\, religious and environmental phenomena. Our participants will learn about the existing approaches to the late medieval crisis. Based on their own reading and interpretation of the sources\, followed by joint discussion\, they will gain a deeper understanding of the methodological possibilities of investigating socio-political\, cultural\, and environmental phenomena of the Late Middle Ages. \n\nELIGIBILITY\nThe participants should be Ph.D. students working on the Middle Ages or interested in topics and methods of medieval studies. The language of the school is English (knowledge of Latin\, German and Czech is welcome but not necessary). \nPROGRAMME\nThe 5-day programme includes three input lectures from the organizers\, collaborative work with primary sources\, discussions based on reading of research literature\, a medieval walking tour in Prague\, and a one-day field trip to Erfurt. \nCOSTS\nThe school is free of charge. The organising institutions will cover accommodation in Prague and Leipzig and the transfer in between. We are aiming for a moderate reimbursement of travel expenses to Prague and from Leipzig. \nApplicants should send an abstract of their thesis and a short CV to martin.bauch@leibniz-gwzo.de and soukup@flu.cas.cz\nThe deadline for applications is 30 April 2022.
