SUMMARY:CfP: The Governance of Medieval European Towns
DESCRIPTION:This year\, from October 8th to the 10th\, the Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM | NOVA-FCSH) and the municipality of Castelo de Vide are organizing the V International Conference on the Middle Ages\, under the theme: The Governance of Medieval European Towns.\nThe importance of this theme justified its selection for the International Conference on the Middle Ages that will take place in Castelo de Vide in 2020. Taking Christian and Muslim medieval Europe as the stage for reflexion\, we wish to analyse the different issues generated by urban governance\, drawing on diverse information sources and looking for ways to bring together perspectives from History\, Archaeology\, Art History\, Literature\, Law\, among others.\nWe invite researchers from any scientific area interested in the subject of urban governance in the medieval period to submit sessions or papers proposals within the range of the following thematic panels: 1. Institutions from the urban power: Recruitment systems and functions 2. The faces of governance: Urban elites 3. Evidences of governance in medieval urbanism: Spaces and constructions 4. Between the written and the lived: The municipal legislation and its application 5. Governing the municipal space: The town 6. Governing the municipal space: The countryside 7. Good government of the town: managing adversity 8. Bad government of the town: Fraud\, corruption\, arrogance 9. Financial management of the town 10. Municipal taxation: taxes and fees 11. The relations between powers within the town 12. The relations of the municipal power with external powers: cooperation and / or conflict 13. Urban leagues and / or brotherhoods 14. Discourses and representations about urban governance 15. The construction of memory and urban identity 16. Governing Castelo de Vide during the Middle Ages The meeting will have four plenary conferences carried out by researchers invited by the organization and thematic sessions. Each session will integrate three paper presentations and will be 60 minutes long. Researchers who interested in participating can submit organized sessions or individual papers which will be gathered by the organizing committee in coherent panels. It will also be possible to\nsubmit poster proposals within the conference’s thematic panels. The meeting will also have a cultural program with guided tours and the Conference Dinner. SUMMARY:Radical Religious Communities in Premodern Societies
DESCRIPTION:A conference on the occasion of the (postponed) 600th anniversary of the foundation of Tábor\nThe emergence of dissenting and radical religious groups was a logical consequence of the pursuit of renewal in premodern Christianity. The separation of such groups from the mainstream can in turn be seen as resulting from the diversity of solutions to the tension between religious idealism and the demands of social and political stability. The relatively intensive research of late medieval and early modern religious separatism has operated in a field demarcated by concepts such as heresy\, reform and reformation\, revolution\, religious movements\, apocalypticism\, and others. By building upon this research tradition\, but not limited by the restraints of any single terminology\, this conference has a twofold aim: to facilitate a more comparative approach by bringing together scholars of various religious communities of premodern Europe\, and to situate the study of dissident religion within its local social\, political\, and communal context. \nFounded in February 1420\, Tábor is just one—albeit in many respects an exceptional—example of a radical religious community. Born from millenarian expectations\, Tábor underwent swift development\, from a sectarian revolutionary commune to a military-political power within Hussitism and a properly established medieval town. In other cases like Florence\, Zürich\, Münster\, Prague\, and many more\, religious radicalism settled into the pre-existing social and political structures of municipal communities\, while other radical groups pursued a clandestine or secluded existence. This conference will deal with the religiously motivated group-formation from the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries\, focusing on movements and ideologies such as (but not limited to) Waldensianism\, Wycliffism\, Hussitism\, spiritual Franciscanism\, the radical Reformation\, and various other utopian and religiously-inspired visions. \nSpeakers are invited to explore the social dimension of radical religion in the medieval and early modern periods. Instead of social-economical determinism\, we would like to focus on local networks\, interpersonal bonds\, and communal dynamisms. As a counterpart to the study of intellectual influences and ideological pedigrees\, we propose to examine how emerging religious groups strove to propagate their message. While investigating the reactions of the of society\, we hope to look beyond the mere reproduction of the ‚image of the other‘ to more practical deliberations about possible solutions to religious separatism\, as well as to proposals for reintegration of radical groups. \nThe conference programme will be structured by the following themes:\n• The social background of radical ideologies: group identity and goals; means of recruitment; media of mobilisation; signs and conditions of success and failure; norms and authority\n• Religious leadership in urban communities: old and new elites; theocratic tendencies and the extent of clerical influence; longevity of religious enthusiasm; the ‚stabilisation‘ of the situation\n• Reactions to religious separatism: strategies of dealing with dissident religious groups; the limits of inclusion; the aim of persecution (extermination\, or reintegration); redefining the semantics of difference \nThe conference is organized jointly by the Centre for Medieval Studies (Institute of Philosophy\, Czech Academy of Sciences) and the Hussite Museum in Tábor. Papers will be allotted 20-25 minutes. The conference language is English\, with simultaneous translation into Czech. Speakers will be offered accommodation in Tábor. SUMMARY:Vyšebrodský rukopis č. 42 jako jedinečný pramen písňové kultury v klášterním prostředí předhusitských Čech
DESCRIPTION:Rukopis č. 42 ze sbírky cisterciáckého kláštera ve Vyšším Brodě patří k nejvýznamnějším památkám hudební tradice předhusitských Čech. Díky příkladům staročeské duchovní lyriky v něm obsaženým\, zejména písním Otep myrry a Doroto\, panno čistá\, pronikla do učebnic středoškolské literatury. Tato v mnoha ohledech jedinečná kolekce unikátních hudebních zápisů na straně jedné a nejstarších známých zápisů později bohatě tradovaných zpěvů na straně druhé skrývá ještě mnoho nevyjasněných otázek. Kdo byl onen Přibík\, který kolem roku 1410 stál za vytvořením této různorodé sbírky? Komu měl vyšebrodský sborník sloužit a komu byly určeny zpěvy v něm zaznamenané? Jedná se o mimořádný „ediční“ počin lokálního dosahu\, anebo ho můžeme považovat za svého druhu jediného přeživšího svědka kdysi opulentní liturgické praxe na území pražské arcidiecéze? \nVe světle podrobné analýzy písma a struktury rukopisu se Vyšší Brod 42 ukazuje nikoli jako dílo jednoho vzdělaného mnicha\, nýbrž jako sbírka\, jejíž funkce se v průběhu psaní postupně vyvíjela. Letopočet 1410 je nutno považovat za okamžik\, kdy byl hotov základní korpus repertoáru\, ale do současné podoby byl rukopis dotvořen až v následujících letech a možná i mimo Přibíkův dohled. Jak se změní náš pohled na tuto sbírku\, uvědomíme-li si\, že vznikala jako živý organismus\, který reflektuje nejen vyšebrodskou hudební praxi\, ale současně naznačuje obecné tendence v dobové liturgické hudbě? \nRukopisu byla v minulém roce věnována pozornost projektu Staré mýty\, nová fakta. Přednáška se pokusí zprostředkovat vhled do života jednoho z nejdůležitějších cisterciáckých klášterů na území Čech. Poodkryje proces vzniku jedné pozdně středověké písňové sbírky včetně rozdělení rolí jednotlivých členů místní klášterní komunity a osvětlí spletitou síť vztahů\, kterou můžeme tušit za strohými údaji „1410 – Vyšší Brod – Přibík“.

SUMMARY:Dialog o shodě mezi Tórou a věděním. Šem Tov ibn Falaquery (1225-1295)
DESCRIPTION:Přednášku prosloví Milan Žonca. \nRecepci antické a středověké arabské filosofické tradice provázely v židovských komunitách (podobně jako ve společnosti křesťanské a muslimské) obsáhlé debaty týkající se vztahu rozumu a zjevení\, přístupu k interpretaci autoritativních náboženských textů a začlenění filosofických spisů do tradičního vzdělávacího kurikula. Šem Tov ibn Falaquera (kolem 1225–1290)\, překladatel a autor řady hebrejských spisů popularizujících studium aristotelské filosofie\, se do těchto debat aktivně zapojil především dvěma svými spisy: Dialogem o shodě mezi Tórou a světskou vědou a dopisem\, jímž vystoupil na obranu Maimonidova Průvodce tápajících během kontroverze\, která se kolem tohoto díla rozpoutala na sklonku 80. let 13. století. Oba texty budou představeny v novém českém překladu a zasazeny do kontextu Falaquerova díla a širšího diskursu o legitimitě filosofie v rámci judaismu.

DESCRIPTION:Srdečně vás zveme na XVI. letní školu medievistických studií\, která se uskuteční 4.–6. září 2020 v klášteře Sázava. Úvodní přednáška\, kterou prosloví Ivan Klimeš\, i sobotní program se budou týkat tématu medievalismus aneb používání středověku v současném světě. Novinkou bude kulatý stůl. \nV neděli dopoledne proběhne doktorandská posterová sekce. Postery mohou prezentovat buď výsledky diplomové práce\, nebo projekty disertací či jejich dílčí výsledky. DESCRIPTION:Ve dnech 30. – 31. 10. 2020 se v areálu hradu Křivoklát uskuteční VI. ročník kastellologické konference věnované památce prof. Tomáše Durdíka. Její účastníci mají možnost publikovat své příspěvky v recenzovaném časopisu Catellologica bohemica. Součástí konference bude\, mimo jiné\, prohlídka hradního areálu zaměřená na archeologii a stavební historii. V hradní kapli pak bude sloužena pobožnost za prof. Tomáše Durdíka. Please register! \nLate medieval chant books include individual inscriptions or sections of so-called cantus fractus\, melodies notated in rhythmic patterns contrary to the usual ‚plainchant‘ cantus planus. Despite the fact that the repertory of cantus fractus was an important part of the late-medieval and early modern musical repertory\, it still remains an almost unexplored field. SUMMARY:Uneven regional development in the Middle Ages: “younger Europe” in transcontinental and intercontinental networks
DESCRIPTION:Uneven development is most commonly defined in terms of the gap between highly developed\, industrialized countries and agrarian countries whose economies are dominated by primary sector activities. Historians have been pointing out for years that the inequalities prevailing in the world arise from structural conditions that are resistant to change and therefore develop very slowly (F. Braudel). Thus\, inequalities are not only the consequences of the Industrial Revolution; they certainly also existed in pre-modern societies. \nBut how do inequalities arise and in which areas do they express themselves? Are they the result of the non-simultaneity of development in different regions\, which is partly due to geographical conditions (“disadvantaged places”) and thus a constant in pre-industrial societies? Or are they created through interactions and confrontations with more economically and technologically advanced structures? If the latter is true\, then inequalities are caused by external factors. \nThe starting point of the conference is the recognition that “younger Europe”\, which J. Kłoczowski essentially equates with East Central Europe\, although the Balkans\, Kievian Rus\, and Scandinavia could be considered a part of it in some centuries\, has been included in continental and intercontinental interaction networks since the Early Middle Ages. In the ninth and tenth centuries\, the economies of north-western Eurasia were already remarkably entangled. For example\, between about 900 and 950\, silver mines in Uzbekistan were running at full speed to serve markets that ranged from the Urals in the east to the Celtic lands on the Atlantic coast in the west\, and from the Crimea in the south to central Sweden in the north. But such interactions did not just involve the exchange of precious metals and goods\, which stimulated commercial cycles. Foreign trade (along with tributes and booty) formed the fiscal and economic basis of the rule of nascent early medieval dynasties. In parallel\, the elites of the emerging states converted to Christianity\, to both the Latin and Orthodox rites. \nFrom the twelfth to fifteenth centuries\, a profound transformation of society and culture took place\, resulting in the increasing emergence of cities with borough rights\, the resettlement of the countryside with free peasants\, the construction of castles\, the expansion of written communication\, and the founding of monasteries and universities. These phenomena spread from west to east. In the late fourteenth century and throughout the fifteenth century\, Ottoman campaigns led to the conquest of large parts of the Balkans\, which initiated the peripheralization of this region. \nThis transformation raises the question of to what extent\, and in what regional terms\, networks and interactions deepened or – on the contrary – levelled out existing social and economic differences in development. DESCRIPTION:Interdisciplinární konference Místa setkávání: prostor a jeho narativy organizovaná doktorandy z Ústavu světových dějin\, semináře středověku\, k problematice a vnímání míst setkávání v narativu středověkých dějin. \nZnačná rozsáhlost a mnohovstevnatost pojmu místa setkávání zabezpečí účastníkům široké pole badání a množství příležitostí k aplikaci interdisciplinárního přístupu. Prostor pro výzkum se proto otevírá nejen pro historiky\, ale i pro široké spektrum badatelů z oblasti humanitních a společenskovědních oborů (sociologie\, antropologie\, práva\, literárně-vědních oborů nebo filozofie). \nPestrost metodologických přístupů\, které se mohou vztahovat k vnímání míst setkávání\, ať už v rovině společenských vrstev (panovnický dvůr\, církev\, měšťanstvo atd.)\, konkrétních prostorů (doma v kruhu rodiny\, anebo v rámci uzavřených skupin\, jako byly cechy\, nebo ve velkých různorodých skupinách na výročních trzích\, popravách atd.)\, tak také v rovině spirituálního\, nebo politicko-vojenského přesvědčení účastníků setkávání (poutě\, vojenská tažení atd.)\, nabízejí bádání jak z hlediska politických\, církevních či hospodářských dějin\, tak z pohledu vědeckého bádání v oblasti reality každodennosti a jejího vnímání. \nKonference si klade za cíl především nastolení následujících otázek: \nKterá místa lze vnímat jako místa setkávání v narativu středověkých a raně novověkých dějin? Jak se proměňovalo jejich vnímání\, a co bylo příčinou těchto změn? Jaký měla místa setkávání vliv na změny ve společnosti (např. v kontextu veřejných poprav\, soudů\, shromažďování okolo potulných kazatelů ect.)? Je v případě setkávání možné pozorovat kontinuitu\, nebo se místa měnila v závislosti na společenských změnách? Jaký vliv měla shromáždění na veřejný prostor\, měnil se jejich status? Formovala jednotlivá místa setkávání názory\, víru a světonázor aktérů? Pokud ano\, jakým způsobem? Jaký vliv na ně měli společenští aktéři a jak na ně nahlíželi? Hrálo v prožívání těchto míst zásadnější roli společenské postavení\, pohlaví nebo věk? SUMMARY:Reprezentace a praxe sociální kontroly v pozdně středověkých městských komunitách
DESCRIPTION:Jagellonské období označil Josef Macek za vrcholnou etapu moci městských obcí. Pod jejich tlakem byly v řadě královských měst zavedeny mechanismy nebo instituce\, které posilovaly kontrolu městských rad – zejména v otázce hospodaření. Městské obce přímo nebo prostřednictvím své reprezentace omezovaly svévoli v rozhodování konšelů\, současně se však svým souhlasem potvrzovaly řadu disciplinačních nařízení městských rad. Někdy dokonce rozhodovaly samostatně bez doložené aktivity konšelských sborů. „Demokratizační“ i „disciplinační“ procesy je proto třeba studovat současně\, už proto\, že se jednalo o tendence\, které nezůstaly omezené na korunní země\, ale jejich analogie můžeme sledovat v řadě okolních zemí. V novém politickém prostředí se prosazovaly nové politické instituce (čtvrtní organizace\, farní obce) a některé starší instituce rozvíjely své dosavadní (například cechy). V měnícím se politickém prostředí musely městské rady hledat nové způsoby politické komunikace s městskou obcí. \nV příspěvcích pořádaného workshopu\, který je součástí řešení grantového projektu GA ČR 20-11247S „Reprezentace a praxe sociální kontroly v pozdně středověkých městských komunitách“ se budeme zaměřovat na roli čtvrtní organizace\, cechů a farních osad. U všech tří institucí máme doloženu odstupňovanou hierarchii moci\, volbu nebo jmenování nadřízených orgánů a institucionální vystupování vůči třetím stranám. Všechny tři instituce vstupovaly do kontaktů s městskými radami a podílely se na posilování sociální kontroly. Jejich aktivitu často upravovaly písemné řády. Zajímat nás bude míra zapojení těchto institucí do správy města a její srovnání s analogickými institucemi v dalších\, zejména německy mluvících zemích. SUMMARY:Aktuelle Forschungen zu den Luxemburgern
DESCRIPTION:Ziel und Format\nDer Workshop möchte den Bearbeitenden aktueller Forschungsprojekte zu den Luxemburgern im spätmittelalterlichen Europa eine Plattform zur gemeinsamen Diskussion bieten. Ziel des Workshops ist ein offener Austausch über derzeit laufende Forschungsprojekte zu den Luxemburgern im Spätmittelalter sowie eine gemeinsame Methodendiskussionen\, vor allem hinsichtlich vergleichender und/oder interdisziplinärer) Forschungsperspektiven. Die Vortragenden präsentieren ihre Vorhaben inhaltlich sowie methodisch und stellen problemorientiert ausgewählte Fragen ihrer Arbeit vor. \nFür die Präsentation gibt es zwei Formate: \na) Zu Beginn der Veranstaltung stellen alle Teilnehmenden in kurzen Präsentationen (max. 5 Min.) Themen und Fragestellungen ihrer Projekte vor. \nb) Ausgewählte Themenschwerpunkte werden im Anschluss in ca. 20‐minütigen Vorträgen eingehender diskutiert. An jede dieser Präsentationen schließt eine ca. 25‐minütige offene Diskussionen an; pro Slot stehen also 45 Minuten zur Verfügung. \nEine gemeinsame Abschlussdiskussion führt aktuelle Ansätze\, virulente Probleme und offene Fragen noch einmal zusammen. \n>>Programm \nDer Workshop findet digital statt. SUMMARY:CfP: Marian Devotion in Late Medieval Society
DESCRIPTION:Marian devotion rose to new heights during the late Middle Ages\, with a huge number of artistic depictions created in a variety of mediums and an influx of new music and texts written in her honour. Her non-biblical activities were documented in many additional writings\, such as Voragine’s Golden Legend\, and expounded upon by theologians and philosophers alike as well as forming a central part of late medieval literature. This informal interdisciplinary colloquium aims to bring together research on Marian devotion to widen our collective understanding of its prevalence and importance in late medieval society. \nWe invite participants from any discipline to submit proposals of no more than 300 words for informal 20-minute contributions (or shorter).\nPlease send an abstract\, expected length (in minutes)\, and a short biography to hallas@mua.cas.cz. \nSubmission deadline: 12 July\, 2021. \nNotification of acceptance will be sent via email by 18 July\, 2021. SUMMARY:Power in Numbers. The Role of the Rural Population in Christianisation and State Formation
DESCRIPTION:The meeting introduces a Primus project\, “Empowering the Voiceless. The Role of the Rural Population in State Building and Christianisation in East-Central Europe”\, started in early 2021 at the Department of Archaeology at Charles University\, Prague\, and aspires to invite scholars working on similar issues to join the discussion with their papers in the framework of a workshop. The proposed meeting is a first of a series that aims to bring together researchers from Europe\, dealing with different\, yet connected\, affairs of the state and church networks’ of archaeological and historical heritage. \nIn the last decade\, interest in the research of Christianisation has been growing. Diverse approaches in history were observable; researchers have investigated the process in the light of state formation\, church law\, hagiography\, and continuing the most traditional branch of research\, the development of the ecclesiastical network. This latter has been primarily focusing on the higher levels – archbishoprics\, bishoprics\, and monastic institutions – mostly due to sources’ availability. The largest segment of the population\, thus the widest audience of Christianisation\, and the smallest yet arguably most influential element of the church network on the process -local churches- were neglected\, as their appearance in written sources is almost nonexistent. Archaeological discussion somewhat followed the footsteps of history; researchers also focused on the archaeology of the largest centres and their ecclesiastical institutions. Besides\, investigations concentrated mainly on the individual by interpreting religion in burials and interpreting the pagan-Christian shift in different cemetery types. Still\, the ambiguity of the definition and the relative scarcity of such data\, these investigations did not result in reliable conclusions. Even though archaeology considered the significant impact that Christianisation had on transforming the rural landscape\, targeted large-scale investigations are yet to be uncovered. Our Primus project focuses on researching the archaeological remains of the earliest network of (rural) local churches and their relation to Christianisation in East-Central Europe\, contextualising and analysing them at a regional level. \nAccordingly\, the workshop aims to examine how and why state politics have interfered in diverse religious affairs; such as the process of Christianisation and the development of the local church system in the early Middle Ages\, the promotion and support of certain cults\, religious orders\, or particular places of pilgrimage to the later Middle Ages\, and give a Longue-durée perspective on the matter\, by bringing these processes together. \nThe workshop welcomes papers focusing on the early and High Middle Ages\, within the range of the following topics: \n– early rural churches\, churchyards and field cemeteries \n– problem of transitional cemeteries and burial practices \n– connection between early state power centres and the ecclesiastical network \n– monastic networks and Christianisation \n– material culture connected to Christianisation \nPrague\, 11-13. October 2021 \nApplicants are asked to send a brief abstract of their 20-minute project contribution (200-300 words) to maria.vargha@ff.cuni.cz by August 31st\, 2021. Limited travel bursaries will be available for those without institutional funding opportunities. Please indicate your application for funding along with your abstract. \nAppliaction deadline: August 31st\, 2021.
