SUMMARY:Tradition and Innovation in Church Furnishings from Early Christian to Romanesque
DESCRIPTION:Příspěvky na téma Tradition and Innovation in Church Furnishings from Early Christian to Romanesque přednesou Justin E. A. Kroesen (University Museum of Bergen) a Aleš Mudra (Generální ředitelství NPÚ\, Praha). \nThe aim of the first part of the meeting is to provide a brief outline of the evolution of liturgical furnishings from Late Antiquity (4th–5th centuries) through the Romanesque period (11th–12th centuries). The attention focuses on elements on and around the altar\, including the ciborium\, cathedra\, and cancelli. It will be shown that in the „Italian world“\, which also includes Croatian Dalmatia\, these elements mainly developed along traditional lines. Elsewhere in Europe\, developments were generally more varied\, with elements taking different shapes and changing locations\, and with several new object types appearing\, such as the altarpiece\, wooden choirstalls and walled tabernacles. In the second part\, we will discuss some ambiguous sub-issues related to medieval liturgical furnishings: the typology of early retables and questions regarding wall niches (piscinas\, niches with chimneys etc.)

SUMMARY:Stát a právo v běhu času 2022
DESCRIPTION:Tematicky široce pojatá mezinárodní interdisciplinární konference\, na které vedle právních historiků\, kteří budou jistě tvořit jádro vystupujících\, uvítáme také účast právníků zabývajících se i dalšími odvětvími práva\, historiků\, archivářů\, archeologů a dalších odborníků zabývajících se ve své vědecké práci problematikou související s vývojem státu a práva od jeho počátků až do současnosti. SUMMARY:IV. kongres světové literárněvědné bohemistiky
DESCRIPTION:V roce 2020 uběhlo čtvrt století od chvíle\, kdy se po pádu železné opony poprvé mohli společně sejít všichni badatelé o české literatuře a přehlédnout minulost a aktuální stav vlastního oboru. Bouřlivý vývoj humanitních věd i dramatické proměny univerzitního prostředí\, odehrávající se na pozadí kulturních\, společenských i politických procesů popisovaných jako globalizace\, uvedly v následujících desetiletích do pohybu sám obor. Situace literárněvědné bohemistiky je dnes charakterizována nejen bohatstvím teoretických rámců a metodologických pozic\, ale také dezintegrací a otřesením institucionální základny bohemistických bádání v těch zemích a regionech světa\, kde bohemistika jako samostatný akademický obor zaniká. \nCílem kongresu bude proto rekapitulovat stav i výhledy oboru\, a to jak v jeho intelektuální\, tak institucionální dimenzi. Jednání bude věnováno vědeckým paradigmatům\, které charakterizují současnou literární vědu a jejich postavení v bohemistice a dále i pozici literárněvědné bohemistiky v dnešním akademickém světě a mediálním prostředí\, respektive výzvám\, kterým bohemistika jako samostatný obor čelí. \nHlavním jednacím jazykem kongresu je čeština (slovenština) a angličtina\, výjimečně je možné přihlásit panely a příspěvky v dalších jazycích. \nKongres se koná pod záštitou předsedy Senátu Parlamentu ČR RNDr. Miloše Vystrčila\, předsedkyně AV ČR prof. RNDr. Evy Zažímalové\, CSc.\, ministra kultury ČR Mgr. Martina Baxy a primátora hlavního města Prahy MUDr. Zdeňka Hřiba.

SUMMARY:CfP: Editing Reconsidered: Editors\, Users and Curators od Medieval Sources in the 21st c.
DESCRIPTION:Critical editions continue to be the primary reference works for scholars of the Middle Ages from various backgrounds. Recent debates in medieval manuscript studies and the growth of the digital community are opening new perspectives for edited and unedited medieval written sources. However\, the dialogue between traditional and digital philology has not yet reached its full potential. Editors of medieval sources have been considered as cultural brokers of medieval studies but they are naturally not alone in the process of knowledge transmission. Their work is greatly influenced by curators of manuscript collections\, while the recipients of the editions\, especially the digital ones\, also shape the knowledge transfer. \nThe 15th century in Europe\, for example\, is considered to be a period of reform impulses that various authors and communities spread through various channels. Authorship attribution and theories of the text\, whose precision or even value was challenged in Minnis’s magisterial contribution (Minnis 1984)\, has gained a new meaning also through advances of modern textual scholarship (e.g. Partridge – Kwakkel 2012). Late medieval textual exchanges\, including the reform ones\, are still a research topic with great potential and dynamic development (Hobbins 2009). \nWe invite medievalists to discuss the challenges faced not only by editors\, but also by recipients of critical editions in the 21st century. Some of these challenges are emerging with new digital technologies (Driscoll – Pierazzo 2016)\, others\, such as the problem of authorship\, have always been linked to scholarly editing. \nThe conference intends to explore more general themes reflecting editorial practices\, techniques and approaches. We invite papers reconsidering a variety of editorial issues\, including\, but not limited to: \n\nreaders and recipients of critical editions\ntheory and practice: the need for general standards applicable to critical editions (philological vs. historical approaches)\nunder-represented authors\, challenges to the concept of single-author models\, multiple authorship\ntextual dynamics in “entangled” texts\nliterary output of the Czech Reformation and its opponents\ntextual responses to reform impulses (especially among religious orders)\ndigital methods for analysing literary texts\ndigital\, print-digital and hybrid editions: expectations\, challenges\, outcomes\ncurating digital editions\nopen access policy and its impact on scholarly editing\n\nProposals for 20-minute papers in English should not exceed 300 words. SUMMARY:CfP: Continuity and Change in Medieval Central Europe
DESCRIPTION:After successful conferences in Budapest (2014)\, Olomouc (2016)\, Zagreb (2018)\, and online in Gdansk (2021)\, the Fifth Biennial Conference of MECERN (http://mecern.eu/) will focus on the vexed relationship between continuity and change in medieval history\, especially in Central Europe. Continuity and Change have always been topics that historians\, archaeologists\, art historians\, social scientists and scholars from other disciplines were interested in. Recently our society has faced profound changes and disruptions. What was the situation in the Middle Ages? Was Central Europe as a specific historical\, cultural\, religious and political region shaped by continual developments on the social and political level\, in the period ca. 500-1600? Or\, was it rather marked by unexpected and radical changes\, which were the essential driving forces in the regionʼs historical development? Which medieval changes influenced the development in Central Europe substantially? What were the ruptures in the medieval past? Which phenomena and spheres of life were marked by continuity rather than change? What are the methods that medievalists use to detect and study them? \nProposals may address (but are not limited to) the following issues: \n\ncontinuity and change in Central Europe with respect to historical periods and periodization\, ways and uses of periodization and division of the past\, the beginning and the end of the Middle Ages in Central Europe\ncontinuity and persistence of pagan and Roman elements in Central Europe\ncontinuities and changes with respect to decline of old and the establishment of new political and state units in Central Europe (such as Great Moravia\, medieval kingdoms of Bohemia\, Poland and Hungary\, etc.)\npersistent or changing impacts of empires present in or surrounding Central Europe\ncontinuity and change with respect to Christianization of society throughout the medieval period\, Reformation(s) and continuity and change\ncontinuity and change from archaeological perspective\ncrucial political\, social\, economic\, religious\, cultural changes and turning points in medieval Central Europe\ndiscoveries and inventions\, introduction of novelties\nnew literary and artistic genres and styles (e.g. Humanist\, Renaissance) versus continuities\ncontinuities and changes in the visual and material culture\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe welcome proposals from scholars researching all aspects of history\, from political\, social\, cultural\, economic\, ecclesiastical\, urban to art\, literary\, intellectual\, and legal history\, historiography\, auxiliary sciences\, archaeology\, historical anthropology. \nBoth individual and panel submissions are welcome\, with papers expected to be twenty-minutes long. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeadline for submissions: 30 September 2022 \nPlease submit a 250-word abstract and one-page CV to mecern.bratislava2023@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlanned registration fee: EUR 85 \nReduced fee for PhD students: EUR 45 \nNo registration fees for scholars from Ukraine and in difficult conditions. DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of the publication in Czech language of the Golden Rhinoceros\, and his invitation by the French Institute and Charles University in partnership with CEFRES\, François-Xavier FAUVELLE presentS his book at the French Institute in Prague. \nThe discussion will be moderated by Irena Jirků\, journalist. \nPresentation\nThe description of a city with twelve mosques in an Arabic story about the Sahel regions; a letter from a Jewish merchant about a caravan from the “Land of the Blacks”; the discovery\, in the middle of the Sahara\, of shells from the Indian Ocean; the effigy of a Malian king on a Catalan map; the ruins of cities built of salt and coral blocks. And gold: a gold shield in a tomb in Senegal; gold coins found in a Christian monastery in Ethiopia; a golden rhinoceros looted and found in South Africa. All these documents testify to the diversity and richness of Africa in the Middle Ages. In his book Le Rhinocéros d’or\, François-Xavier Fauvelle reconstructs\, with the help of these fragments\, a “stained glass window” that reveals forgotten kingdoms\, from the savannah empires of West Africa to the coastal principalities of Kenya and Tanzania. An Africa that participates in the great trade with the Islamic world\, India and China\, reexamining the places and actors of a global Middle Ages. \nFrançois-Xavier Fauvelle is professor at Collège de France in Paris\, first holder of the chair entitled History and archeology of African worlds. He has taught at Princeton University\, led international research programs in South Africa\, Ethiopia and Morocco. Among more than twenty books translated into a dozen of languages\, he is the author of A Golden Rhinoceros. Histories of African Middle Ages that has been published in Czech in 2021: Zlatý nosorožec: příběhy o africkém středověku (Karolinum\, 2021\, transl. Alena Lhotová\, Helena Beguivinová).

SUMMARY:Herrschaft\, Schutz und Verrat. Die jüdischen Gemeinden unter Erzbischof Balduin von Trier und Kaiser Karl IV. in Böhmen und im Reich
DESCRIPTION:Erzbischof Balduin von Trier (†1354) gilt allgemein als der starke Landesherr\, der seine Juden schützte und förderte\, ganz im Gegensatz zu seinem Großneffen Karl IV.\, der in seinen Anfangsjahren als schwacher König\, bedrängt von seinen Widersachern Juden preisgab und verriet. Ist diese Einschätzung zutreffend? Der Vortrag beleuchtet die verschiedenen Seiten des Königsschutzes und der Strategien\, die sowohl Landesherren als auch Herrscher damit verfolgten. Was konkret bedeutete Königsschutz? Durften die Juden ohne Erlaubnis das Territorium ihres Schutzherrn verlassen? Das Gegenteil von Freizügigkeit\, die Schollenpflichtigkeit\, war ein Kennzeichen der unfreien bäuerlichen Bevölkerung. Inwieweit wurde die königliche Schutzherrschaft über die Juden als Leibeigenschaft\, als persönliche Unfreiheit aufgefasst? Der Vortrag beleuchtet anhand zweier Luxemburger\, Erzbischof Balduins und Kaiser Karls IV.\, das vielschichtige Verhältnis der Juden zu ihren Schutzherren im 14. Jahrhundert. \nEva Schlotheuber studierte Geschichte\, Archäologie und Anthropologie an den Universitäten Göttingen und Kopenhagen. Sie wurde 1994 in Göttingen promoviert. Sie war wissenschaftliche Assistentin an der Technischen Universität Braunschweig und der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Von 2007 bis 2010 lehrte sie als Professorin für Mittelalterliche Geschichte und Hilfswissenschaften an der Universität Münster und seit 2010 an der Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf. Zuletzt erschien: „Gelehrte Bräute Christi“ Geistliche Frauen in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft\, Tübingen 2018.
